Halloween has been a big deal around our house. My son loves to go to the stores to look at all the new decorations available. Yes, I know it is a bit weird for a pastor’s household.

With Halloween being a big deal in our house I have spent time looking at various models available. Then there are some other ideas. When I was in high school I had a farm injury that I really did not know was bad until a few years later when picking up a seemingly light box landed me in bed for a couple of days. Since that time I have visited a chiropractor every month for pretty much my entire adult life. With much of my attention being drawn to the spine, and having friends in the field chiropractic care I have looked at several spine themed ideas.
Halloween and the spine pretty much go hand in hand and the 3D printing world does not fail to deliver. I have found everything from complete articulated models of the spine, 3D models of actual spinal scans, desktop pencil holders, to my personal favorite the vertebrae with a hidden candy compartment.

Overall thoughts. Great design. The level of detail is great. with the right filament you could make it fairly authentic. I used Inland White PLA+ from MicroCenter For the one vertebrae with lid, it took just over 2 hours to print. To print the complete set of five lumbar vertebrae, would take around eight and a half hours and use an estimated 134.13 grams of filament. With the level of detail and the odd shape the use of support material is needed which added to the time and materials. With those estimations it would cost around $1.38 per vertebrae. Not too bad if you wanted to add a bit of a trick to your Halloween treats.
This model, has a non commercial license meaning you cannot just buy it from a vendor at a local expo, unless that vendor has received permission from DaveMakesStuff. This means you will need to somehow to print it yourself. When we first started trying 3D printing we would go to the Black & Veatch MakerSpace at the Johnson County Library. This is an easy way to try out the hobby. If you do not have access to this type of facility, I am fairly certain you will be able to find someone around that would allow you to borrow their printer for a few hours. In my areas there are several places that allow you to rent their printers for an hourly rate.
